Saint Paul, Minnesota Natives, Metric and Maisha Giles are two of nine siblings. They were raised to value the black community, culture, and above all, to value self. They were raised by compassionate, intelligent, and confident parents. Metric and Maisha have dedicated their lives to helping others, Metric as a Minneapolis firefighter and Maisha, a non-profit practitioner. Together they started NIV (Not in Vain) to respond to national conversations about the value of black people and their place in America. Metric's hope is, in spite of the racism and inequality, these statements will show who WE are. Maisha created NIV with the hopes that the clothing will be worn as a reminder to the world, the undeniable contributions black people have and will continue to make. Simply put, the world is because WE are.
